FAQ — Why Curators, Artists, and Musicians Still Need a Website
Why can’t I just use Instagram or other social media?
Social media is great for visibility, but it’s temporary. Posts get buried, the algorithm decides who sees your work, and the presentation is always framed by the platform. A website is different: it’s stable, focused, and entirely under your control. People see your work the way you intend, not squeezed into a feed.
What should an artist’s website include?
At the very least:
- a selection of your best work
- a short bio or artist statement
- a way to contact you
- basic information about exhibitions or projects
You can always add more — press, writing, videos, a shop — but even a simple structure can make a strong impression.
Do galleries and curators actually look at artist websites?
Yes — many do. When someone is interested in your work, the first thing they’ll often do is search your name. A clear, organized website makes it easy for them to understand what you do, how your work has developed, and how to contact you. It signals seriousness and professionalism.
Do artists and orgnizations look at curator websites?
It might seem counterintuitive to think that curators can use websites but when applying for grants or positions of employment a website can establish a conceptual framework to your practice online offering clarity for followers and your area of expertise.
When should I make a website?
As soon as you have a small but coherent group of works you feel comfortable showing. You don’t need a huge portfolio — just something that represents you honestly. It’s better to build the foundation early, rather than wait until you’re applying for something important.
Does my site need to be complicated?
No. The best artist websites are often very simple. A few pages, large images, clear text, and an easy way to reach you. Clean and quiet usually works better than over-designed.
Why Not Wix or Other Big Website Builders?
Most of these platforms charge low introductory rates and then pile on small fees for things you thought were included: email accounts, storage, extra pages, video hosting, forms, SEO tools, and even removing their branding. Over time, the monthly charges add up, and you end up paying far more than you expected for a very simple site! Yay capitalism! 🙁

Finally, these platforms are built for everyone: cafés, gyms, real-estate agents, online stores, and anything else you can imagine. Their templates and tools often feel generic, overloaded with features artists don’t need, and strangely limited in areas where artists do need flexibility — like image layouts, long-term archiving, or high-quality galleries.
Another issue is control. Your site lives inside their system, and it’s difficult to move your content elsewhere if you ever want to leave. You’re tied to their templates, their editing tools, and whatever changes they decide to make in the future. It’s their house — you’re just renting a room in it.
For many artists and musicians, a simple, well-designed WordPress site on reliable hosting — with real human support — ends up being easier, cheaper, and far more personal in the long run.
Wix, Squarespace, and similar platforms can look convenient at first glance — but for many artists, they become expensive, limiting, and unnecessarily complicated.
How does having a website help my career?
A website acts as a central, permanent place where people can find you. It helps for everything: exhibition opportunities, residencies, commissions, grant applications, and general visibility. It also makes you easier to share — a curator or friend can simply send someone your link.
Why isn’t social media enough?
Social media moves fast and rarely shows your work in sequence or context. A website gives you space to curate: you choose which works appear first, how they’re grouped, and how much text surrounds them. It allows people to take your work in slowly, without distractions.
